About Us

Purpose

The Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness Program (KDSAP) is a student-run organization for undergraduates wishing to gain hands-on medical experience. KDSAP provides opportunities for community outreach to raise public awareness and promote early detection of chronic kidney disease (CKD). OU KDSAP does this through hosting kidney disease screening clinics free of charge to undeserved populations and has presentations from local physicians about kidney disease and the field of nephrology.

History

The Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness Program was founded and created by Li-Li Hsiao, MD, PhD, in March 2008. The first chapter is at Harvard College. Since this, KDSAP has grown and there are now 23 chapters across universities in the United States. The University of Oklahoma chapter was established in 2020. Due to covid-19, we have not been able to do a screening, but we hope to be able to do one soon.

How to Prevent Kidney Disease

Screenings help find out if you are at risk for kidney disease or have already developed kidney disease. Since kidney disease usually remains undetected until late stages, we hope to raise awareness of kidney disease to promote early detection and prevention

Regular Doctor Visits
  • Your doctor can help you control high blood pressure and diabetes, avoid medications that hurt your kidneys, and avoid too much protein and sodium in your diet

Drink Enough Fluid
  • 2 liters a day can help prevent kidney stones

Exercise Often
  • You should try and exercise 5 times a week, for 30-60 minutes.

Eat Healthy
  • Avoid food that is high in fats, salts, and sugar

Upcoming Events

Hey everyone!

Join us for our Mock Screening GBM on March 9th at 5:30 PM in the Frontier Room! This will be a great opportunity to practice and prepare for our upcoming Kidney Screening on Monday, March 23rd from 2:00–5:30 PM.

We’ll go over the screening process, what each role looks like, and help everyone feel confident and ready for the real event. Whether you’ve screened before or this is your first time, this is the perfect chance to learn and ask questions!

Come out, get some practice in, and help us get ready to make our kidney screening a success! This event will benefit any pre-med student at OU hoping to learn more about the medical field.

Return soon to see more events planned for the Fall 2026 semester!

Have a great summer break!
